Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn

The Saga Archive

The Genesis

BioWare sought to create the ultimate Dungeons & Dragons experience. Building on the Infinity Engine, they expanded the scope to the Amn region, creating hundreds of quests, writing millions of words of dialogue, and adding fully voiced companions with their own personal quests, romances, and moral alignments.

The Experience

In September 2000, players were plunged into a rich fantasy epic. Confronting the sinister wizard Jon Irenicus, players managed a party of legendary characters like Minsc and Boo. Combat was highly tactical, requiring active pausing to cast spells and coordinate attacks, while the story offered deep political, magical, and personal intrigue.

The Legacy

Baldur’s Gate II is the high-water mark of classic isometric RPGs. It set the standard for party interaction, companion writing, and tactical D&D combat, serving as the spiritual ancestor to modern RPG masterpieces like Dragon Age and Baldur’s Gate 3.
