Civilization IV

The Saga Archive

The Genesis

Soren Johnson and Firaxis Games set out to modernize the legendary turn-based strategy series. They rebuilt the game in full 3D using the Gamebryo engine, streamlined the complex mechanics, and introduced a sophisticated civic system. They also commissioned the theme song “Baba Yetu” by Christopher Tin and hired Leonard Nimoy to narrate technology quotes.

The Experience

In October 2005, players clicked “One More Turn” until the sun came up. Watching empires grow from small tribes to spacefaring civilizations was deeply satisfying. The game felt elegant, strategic, and polished. Hearing Leonard Nimoy’s booming voice narrate quotes or listening to “Baba Yetu” made history feel grand and inspiring.

The Legacy

Civilization IV is widely considered the peak of the Civilization series. “Baba Yetu” became the first video game song to win a Grammy, and the game’s mechanics set a standard for turn-based strategy that remains the benchmark for the entire 4X genre.
