Counter-Strike
The Saga Archive
The Genesis
Counter-Strike began not as a corporate project, but as a free mod for Half-Life created by Minh “Gooseman” Le and Jess “Cliffe” Cliffe. They wanted to build a realistic, team-based tactical shooter. The mod gained such massive popularity that Valve purchased the intellectual property and hired the creators, officially releasing it as a standalone game.
The Experience
In November 2000, players crowded into internet cafes and home LAN setups to defuse bombs or rescue hostages. Playing as Counter-Terrorists or Terrorists, players learned map layouts, weapon recoil patterns, and tactical communication. The tension of being the last player alive, clutching a round with a desert eagle or AWP, was unmatched.
The Legacy
Counter-Strike birthed the modern tactical shooter and remains a cornerstone of the global esports scene. Its simple yet incredibly high-skill gameplay loop proved the power of community-driven modding and established a multi-billion dollar competitive gaming ecosystem.
